Canola and Its Place in Witchcraft

Canola (Brassica napus) is a bright yellow flowering plant best known for producing canola oil, one of the world’s most widely used cooking oils. Developed from rapeseed through selective breeding to reduce undesirable compounds, canola is valued for its agricultural and nutritional benefits. While it is not among the most commonly cited magical herbs in historical witchcraft traditions, modern practitioners have found symbolic and practical uses for canola in contemporary magical work.

The plant’s vibrant yellow blossoms are strongly associated with the energies of the sun. In many forms of folk magic and modern witchcraft, yellow flowers symbolize happiness, abundance, confidence, and personal power. Because canola blooms in large, golden fields, it is often connected with prosperity, growth, and the successful completion of goals. Witches may incorporate canola flowers into seasonal rituals celebrating spring and early summer, particularly those focused on renewal, fertility, and the return of warmth and light.

Canola seeds and oil can also be used symbolically in spellcraft. Seeds are frequently associated with potential, new beginnings, and manifestation. A practitioner might place canola seeds on an altar while setting intentions for future projects or personal growth. The act of planting the seeds can become a magical working in itself, representing the nurturing of desires until they come to fruition.

Canola oil may serve as a carrier oil for blending essential oils used in anointing rituals, candle magic, or spiritual cleansing practices. Its smooth texture and widespread availability make it a practical choice for magical preparations. Some practitioners charge the oil with intentions related to prosperity, success, or protection before using it in rituals.

From an elemental perspective, canola is often linked to Earth because of its agricultural roots and its role in nourishment. Its bright flowers may also establish a secondary connection to Fire through solar symbolism. Together, these associations make canola a useful plant for workings focused on growth, abundance, vitality, and positive transformation.

Though canola lacks the extensive magical folklore of herbs such as rosemary or mugwort, its symbolism of flourishing life, sunlight, and abundance has earned it a meaningful place in modern witchcraft practices.
