31Understanding the Power of Feelings: Why Feelings Seem Automatic

Many people believe emotions simply happen to them. It often feels as though outside events or other people completely determine emotional reactions. This belief is understandable because emotional responses usually occur automatically and very quickly.

Part of the reason lies in how the subconscious mind works. The subconscious stores emotional memories connected to past experiences. Whenever something happens in the present, the mind searches for similar situations from the past and produces familiar emotional reactions.

This process happens constantly. A conversation, a memory, a sound, or even a small event can trigger stored emotional responses without conscious awareness.

The subconscious mind performs many important tasks automatically, including physical functions such as breathing and heartbeat regulation. Emotional patterning works in a similar way. It is designed to protect and guide behaviour based on previous experiences.
