103Understanding and Locating a Deadline

Deadlines can create pressure, especially when they involve important goals such as completing a work project, securing financial approval, or making a purchase before an offer expires. This visualisation exercise is designed to help create a stronger sense of confidence and alignment with the outcome you want. It also encourages flexibility, recognising that circumstances may shift in unexpected ways.

Begin by sitting comfortably and allowing the mind to settle. Imagine a timeline stretching out in front of you. The past extends to the left, the future to the right, while the present moment sits directly ahead. Picture reaching out and touching this timeline with one hand.

Slowly move your hand along the line. Moving left brings awareness to memories and experiences from the past. Moving right represents expectations, possibilities, and future events. Return your hand to the centre point, representing the present.

Now move your hand slowly toward the future once again. This time, search for the point where the deadline exists. There is no need to rush. Simply notice where it appears along the timeline and allow your hand to rest there briefly. Acknowledge its position calmly and without resistance. The aim is not to fear the deadline, but to become comfortable with its presence.

Return again to the present moment. Once more, move slowly toward the future, but this time look for the desired outcome connected to the deadline. This may be the completion of a task, gathering important paperwork, finding the necessary funds, or successfully finishing preparations in time.

When this point is located, notice where it sits in relation to the deadline. It may appear before it, after it, or perhaps very close beside it. Whatever appears is acceptable. The exercise is designed to help reshape the emotional relationship between the goal and the time limit, creating a stronger sense that success is both possible and achievable.
