Sigil Magick

Sigils

A sigil is a symbol used in magic. The term usually refers to a type of pictorial signature. In the context of Chaos Magic, it refers to the symbolic representation of your desired outcome.

The current use of the term sigil is derived from Renaissance Magic, which was inspired by the magical traditions of antiquity.

In medieval Ceremonial Magic, the term referred to occult signs which represented various angels and demons that might be summoned.

Sigils, such as those described in The Lesser Key of Solomon, were considered to be equivalent to the true names of spirits, which granted the magician some measure of control over the beings.

Notes:

(1) Pronunciation: /ˈsɪdʒəl/; the plural is sigilia or sigils; from the Latin word “sigillum” meaning “seal.”
