The Dwarfie Stane is found on the island of Hoy in Orkney. It is one of the most mysterious ancient monuments in the British Isles. This huge block of sandstone was carved directly from the rock. It has a small, carefully made entrance that faces west. Inside, the chambers are smooth and have sharp corners, giving the space an ancient and unusual feeling. The entrance is closed by a heavy stone plug, which fits perfectly but still lets a little air pass through. This helps keep the chamber’s air fresh.
The Dwarfie Stane is different from other ancient tombs in Britain. It does not look like the usual Neolithic tombs or passage graves found in the area. Instead, it seems to be inspired by tombs from the Mediterranean, especially the Domus de Janas, or “House of the Fairies,” in Sardinia. These Sardinian tombs have similar features—precisely cut chambers and a layout much like the Dwarfie Stane. Both places also share a special sound quality: when you make a noise inside, it echoes at a frequency of 116 Hz. This is almost the same as the sound found in the King’s Chamber at Giza in Egypt.
This echo, or resonance, is more than just interesting. Modern studies show that hearing this frequency can affect the human brain. It may help the brain switch between its left and right sides. Ancient people might have used this effect on purpose, to help them enter different states of mind or have spiritual experiences.
