How To Make a Witch’s Ladder

The witch’s ladder is a traditional tool employed for meditation and ritual, serving a function similar to that of a rosary. It is designed to facilitate focus and intent, with various colors symbolizing specific purposes. Additionally, the ladder acts as a counting device, enabling practitioners to accurately repeat actions or incantations as required by certain spellwork. The practitioner moves feathers or beads along the ladder to maintain count. Traditionally, the witch’s ladder is constructed using red, white, and black yarn, with nine differently colored feathers woven into the braid.

Instructions:

It is advisable to select yarn colors that hold personal significance or are relevant to the intended purpose of the ritual. Acquiring nine feathers of distinct colors may prove challenging, particularly if one wishes to avoid disturbing local wildlife. Therefore, it is acceptable to substitute feathers with other items such as beads, buttons, pieces of wood, shells, or any objects of similar properties that are readily available.
To create a basic witch’s ladder, you will require:

  • Yarn or cord in three different colors
  • Nine items of similar type but in different colors (such as beads, shells, or buttons)
Cut three pieces of yarn or cord, each of a workable length—approximately one yard is recommended. While the traditional colors are red, white, and black, there is no strict requirement to adhere to this palette. Secure the three strands together with a knot at one end.

Begin braiding the three strands together, incorporating the feathers or chosen items into the braid and securing each with a firm knot. Some practitioners choose to recite a chant or count aloud as each item is added. The following is a variation of a traditional chant that may be used:
By knot of one, the spell’s begun.
By knot of two, the magic comes true.
By knot of three, so it shall be.
By knot of four, this power is stored.
By knot of five, my will shall drive.
By knot of six, the spell I fix.
By knot of seven, the future I leaven.
By knot of eight, my will be fate.
By knot of nine, what is done is mine.

As each item is secured, concentrate on your intent and desired outcome. Upon tying the ninth and final knot, direct all remaining energy and focus into the cords, knots, and items. The energy is believed to be stored within the knots of the witch’s ladder. Once complete, the ladder may be finished by knotting the end and hanging it, or by tying the two ends together to form a circle.

Materials Required:

Yarn or cord in three different colors, and nine feathers or alternative items to incorporate into the ladder.
