Creating a Simple Besom.
The besom, or witch’s broom, is a traditional tool for both physical and spiritual cleansing. Making your own besom is a meaningful ritual that connects you to the land and the energy of the plants you use.
Step 1: Gather your materials. Select a variety of plants, each chosen for its unique properties. For protection, use yarrow. For resilience and purification, choose cedar or juniper. To invite abundance, add sprigs from fruit trees. Oak brings strength, while birch and ash symbolize new beginnings and transformation.
Step 2: Harvest your plants respectfully. Take only what you need, and thank each plant for its gift. Pick stems that are both flexible and sturdy. Allow freshly cut branches to dry for one or two days to prevent mold.
Step 3: Prepare your bundle. Align the cut ends of your chosen plants together. Secure the bundle tightly with natural twine or cotton cord.
Step 4: If you want a longer handle, select a sturdy branch, such as ash or oak. Attach your plant bundle to the branch, binding them firmly with more twine.
Step 5: Decorate your besom. Traditionally, ribbons, charms, or dried flowers are added to enhance its magical properties. You may also consecrate your besom by passing it through incense smoke or placing it under the full moon.
Step 6: Use your finished besom to sweep away negative energy from your home or sacred space. During ritual, sweep the area in a sunwise direction to purify and define your magic circle, inviting clarity and protection.
