Creating a Hex Sign

This guide introduces the process of making a Hex sign—a traditional symbol often used for protection, luck, or to invite certain energies into a space. The steps are designed to be accessible for beginners and can be adapted to fit your preferences and available materials.

To start, gather the materials you would like to use. A blank surface is needed for your sign. Options include a wooden plaque, canvas, sturdy paper, or cardboard. Select whichever option is most convenient and comfortable for you.

Consider how you would like to display your finished sign. A nail, hook, or another hanging method may be useful. For decoration, paints, markers, colored pencils, or other art supplies can be chosen. Scented oils are also helpful for anointing the sign at the end.

Before beginning, it may be helpful to reflect on the purpose of your Hex sign. Think about what you hope it will bring into your life, such as love, hope, protection, luck, or inspiration. Consider which colors, symbols, and arrangements best represent your intention. If you are unsure about symbols, resources such as books or online guides can provide ideas. For instance, roses are often linked to love, tulips to hope, wolves to protection, cats to luck, and bluebell flowers to the presence of fae.

Once you have an idea in mind, lightly sketch your design onto your chosen surface. This allows for adjustments before adding color. There is no need for perfection; the intention behind your design is most important.

Begin decorating your Hex sign using your selected paints, markers, or pencils. Playing music in the background can help create a positive atmosphere. If others are interested, this activity can be enjoyed together.

When the decoration is complete, allow the Hex sign to dry fully. During this time, you may wish to repeat a simple chant or affirmation to reinforce its purpose. For example, “Hex sign, hex sign, bring me [state your desire].” Repeat as often as feels appropriate.

After the sign has dried, anoint it with your chosen scented oils. Place a small amount of oil on your fingertip and gently trace the outline of your design, or dab the oil onto the corners. This step is thought to activate and empower the sign with your intention.

The Hex sign can then be hung or placed in a location where its energy will be most beneficial. Common locations include the kitchen, entryway, living room, or bathroom, but any space you prefer is suitable.

Throughout this process, the intention and care you invest are most important. Enjoy the creative experience, and trust that your efforts may bring positive energy into your space.
