Cleansing Chants

Cleansing chants are a key part of many witchcraft practices. They are used to purify both the space and the practitioner before beginning any ritual or magical work. This process helps remove unwanted energies, creates a sacred atmosphere, and clarifies your intentions for what follows.

The main purpose of cleansing chants is to help focus your mind and spirit. By reciting these words and performing the related actions, you connect with tradition and add power to your rituals.

The chants shared here are inspired by rhymes originally taught to Laurelei in her first cuveen, though some have been adapted to suit different needs and preferences.

Each part of the chant is paired with a specific tool and action. Traditionally, a Witch walks the compass—either once or three times—while using the chosen cleansing tool. This movement helps define and protect the ritual space.

To begin, use smoke and fume, such as incense or dried herbs. Light the incense and walk slowly around your space, letting the smoke reach every corner. This is believed to carry away stagnant or negative energies.

The chant for this step is: “Smoke and fume, now as you burn, cause all harm from us to turn; let nothing harmful here be found, as we tread the witch’s round.”

Next, use fire, often represented by a candle. The flame stands for transformation and protection. Carry the lit candle around the compass, and imagine its light clearing away negativity.

The chant for fire is: “Fire that burns and light that glows, send all harm away from us; let nothing harmful here be found, as we tread the witch’s round.”

Water and salt, or brine, are used together to cleanse and bless the space. Sprinkle the mixture lightly as you walk, picturing it washing away any lingering negativity.

The chant for water and salt is: “Water and salt, brine of the sea, wash this circle clean and free; let nothing harmful here be found, as we tread the witch’s round.”

The besom, or ritual broom, is used to sweep the area—both physically and energetically. Sweep above, below, and in between, imagining all unwanted influences being removed.

The chant for the besom is: “Besom sweep and besom clean; above, below and in between; let nothing harmful here be found, as we tread the witch’s round.”

For those new to this practice, it can be helpful to prepare your tools ahead of time and move at a pace that feels comfortable. You might choose incense, candles, or salt blends that appeal to you, and you are welcome to adapt the chants to reflect your own beliefs or intentions.

The most important part of any cleansing ritual is your focus and intent. By performing these steps with care and mindfulness, you create a space that is both protected and ready for your magical work.
