Some practitioners believe that one element can be used to balance another. For example, Fire might be called upon to counteract floods, or Water to ease drought. Others suggest that each element is best balanced by itself; for example, too much Fire could be grounded by invoking Earth, rather than adding Water.
During a ritual, it is typical to light the elemental candles after lighting the altar candles and casting the circle, but before lighting any wish or astrological candles. Traditionally, you would start in the North with a green candle for Earth, then move clockwise to the other elements. This order helps create a harmonious and energetically balanced space for your practice.
