Astrology 7: The Foundation

In Western astrology, the twelve zodiac signs are considered the foundation. Each sign is traditionally connected to one of the seven classical planets or luminaries: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. (short pause) While the Sun and Moon are not technically planets, ancient astrologers included them with the five visible planets for simplicity and tradition.

These seven celestial bodies, often called the “sacred seven,” are thought to influence many aspects of life on Earth. Their connections go beyond just the zodiac signs. For instance, each day of the week is linked to one of these planets—Sunday to the Sun, Monday to the Moon, and so forth.

The associations continue further. The sacred seven are also related to the colors of the rainbow, certain minerals, metals, and jewels, as well as various plants, trees, animals, fish, and birds. Learning about these links can help practitioners build a deeper relationship with the natural world and the rhythms of the cosmos. By understanding which planet is connected to a sign, a day, or a material, it becomes possible to align magical practices and rituals with these cosmic influences, which may enhance intention and results.
