Astral Magick: The idea of an Astral Double

Why do people believe that astral doubles separate from our bodies? (short pause) The idea of an astral double—sometimes called the astral body or subtle body—has existed in spiritual traditions around the world for thousands of years. Many cultures teach that each person has an invisible counterpart that can leave the physical body, especially during sleep, trance, or ritual. (pause) This process is often described as a journey, where the astral double travels to other realms, dimensions, or distant places.

In the past, people saw important reasons for this separation. For example, in ancient Egypt, the “ka” was thought to be a spiritual double that could move on its own, especially after death. In Norse tradition, the “fylgja” was a spirit that could appear in dreams or visions, sometimes as a sign or omen. Shamans in Siberia and the Americas believed they could send their astral doubles to find lost souls, communicate with spirits, or seek advice for their communities. In these societies, being able to separate the astral double was considered a sign of spiritual strength and wisdom.

Astral projection was not just for personal discovery. It also served practical and community purposes. People believed it could be used to gather information for battles, deliver messages over long distances, warn of danger, or even influence the dreams of others. In some cultures, the astral double was thought to heal, protect, or curse, depending on the practitioner’s intent.

In ancient times, those who could not dream or astral project were sometimes seen as unlucky or spiritually lacking. On the other hand, people who were skilled at astral travel—such as druids, shamans, priests, priestesses, witches, healers, and seers—were highly respected. Their journeys were believed to bring back wisdom, healing, and insight for the whole community.

Today, the meaning of astral projection has changed. Many people now seek out-of-body experiences for personal growth, spiritual exploration, or curiosity. Books and online forums describe using astral travel to meet otherworldly beings, explore dreamlike landscapes, or gain new perspectives on life. Some see it as a mystical or transformative practice, while others view it as a psychological experience or a vivid form of lucid dreaming.

Even though the understanding of astral projection has evolved, the idea of separating from one’s body still holds deep meaning. Whether it is seen as a spiritual journey, a tool for healing, or a way to access hidden knowledge, the astral double remains a powerful symbol of humanity’s desire to explore the mysteries of existence.
