Astral Magick: Separation From the Body

Separation from the body is an idea found in many spiritual and esoteric traditions. It describes the belief that each person has a soul, spirit, or subtle essence that can temporarily leave the physical body and exist on its own. This non-physical part is sometimes called an “astral double” or “etheric body.”

Different cultures understand this concept in their own ways. In Western occultism and modern witchcraft, the astral double is believed to travel on the astral plane, which is seen as a realm separate from the physical world. Some Eastern philosophies talk about similar experiences as the movement of consciousness or prana beyond the body. In Indigenous and shamanic traditions, people may refer to soul flight or spirit journeying, where the spirit visits other realms for guidance or healing.

People who experience separation from the body often describe sensations like floating, seeing their own body from above, or traveling to new and symbolic places. Some also mention meeting spiritual beings, receiving messages, or gaining insight during these journeys. While beliefs and interpretations differ, the idea of an astral double remains important in many mystical and magical practices around the world.
