Astral projection, also known as astral travel, is an idea found in many spiritual and esoteric traditions. It refers to the belief that a person’s consciousness, sometimes called the “astral body” or “soul,” can separate from the physical body and travel on its own. This experience is closely related to what is called an out-of-body experience, or OBE. While both terms are similar, astral projection usually means a person tries to leave their body on purpose, while OBEs can happen unexpectedly, such as during trauma, near-death experiences, or deep meditation.
The belief in traveling outside the physical body is very old and appears in many cultures. For instance, in ancient Egypt, people believed the “ba” was a part of the soul that could move outside the body. In Norse mythology, some practitioners, known as “seiðr,” were thought to send their spirits out to gather information or affect distant events. Likewise, shamanic traditions in Siberia and the Americas describe spirit journeys for healing, guidance, or exploration.
In Hinduism, the idea of the “subtle body,” or “sukshma sharira,” is important in yoga and meditation. Advanced practitioners may feel as if they travel beyond the physical world. Buddhism also mentions traveling in non-physical forms, especially in Tibetan traditions, where practices like dream yoga explore consciousness beyond the body. Even in Christianity, some saints and mystics have described leaving their bodies, often as visions or spiritual experiences.
Interest in astral projection grew in the 20th century. Writers like Sylvan Muldoon and Robert Monroe shared detailed stories and methods for having these experiences. Today, people may try astral travel through guided meditations, lucid dreaming, or ritual practices. Many seek personal insight, spiritual growth, or simply the adventure of exploring new states of consciousness.
Although science has not proven astral projection, the idea continues to interest people around the world. The fact that so many cultures share similar beliefs suggests a deep curiosity about the limits of consciousness and the mysteries of existence. Whether seen as a real journey or a powerful symbol for self-exploration, astral travel remains an inspiring part of many spiritual paths.
