Astrology 8: Correspondences

In witchcraft and ceremonial magic, understanding planetary and astrological rulerships is very important. These connections, known as correspondences, help guide choices in magical practice—such as which herbs, stones, or colors to use, and when to perform rituals. By learning about these rulerships, practitioners can make their spells and charms more focused and meaningful.

For instance, if someone wants to create a charm for love, it is helpful to choose herbs that are linked to Venus. Venus is the planet associated with love, beauty, and attraction. Using Venus-ruled herbs is thought to strengthen the charm by drawing on the qualities that Venus represents.

The Moon is another example. It is connected to intuition, psychic abilities, and the subconscious. Herbs ruled by the Moon, like mugwort—also called Artemisia vulgaris—are often used in teas or infusions to support psychic awareness or dream work. Many believe that drinking mugwort tea can help open the mind to visions and subtle insights, making it a common choice for rituals involving divination or dreams.

Learning these correspondences is considered a basic step for anyone interested in practicing magic with intention. This process involves more than just memorizing which plants or stones are linked to which planets. It also includes understanding the symbols and signs that show these connections. Books such as Aleister Crowley’s “777” (especially the 1956 edition from The Neptune Press) offer detailed tables of correspondences and are valuable resources for those studying the occult. Another important book is “The Magus” by Francis Barrett, first published in 1801. This work was especially appreciated by ‘Cunning’ Murrell, a well-known wizard from Essex, who was respected for his practical magical skills.

By exploring these resources and learning about astrological rulerships, practitioners can approach their magical work with more clarity and confidence. This knowledge not only deepens the practice of witchcraft, but also connects modern practitioners to a long tradition of wisdom that has been passed down through generations.
